The Golden Touch of Jay Amit Shah
excerpts
The turnover of a company owned by Jay Amitbhai Shah, son of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Shah, increased 16,000 times over in the year following the election of Narendra Modi as prime minister and the elevation of his father to the post of party president, filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show.

Company balance sheets and annual reports obtained from the RoC reveal that in the financial years ending March 2013 and 2014, Shah’s Temple Enterprise Private Ltd. engaged in negligible activity and recorded losses of Rs 6,230 and Rs 1,724 respectively. In 2014-15, it showed a profit of Rs 18,728 on revenues of only Rs 50,000 before jumping to a turnover of Rs 80.5 crore in 2015-16.

The astonishing surge in Temple Enterprise’s revenues came at a time when the firm received an unsecured loan of Rs 15.78 crore from a financial services firm owned by Rajesh Khandwala, the samdhi (in-law) of Parimal Nathwani, a Rajya Sabha MP and top executive of Reliance Industries.

One year later, in October 2016, however, Jay Shah’s company suddenly stopped its business activities altogether, declaring, in its director’s report, that Temple’s net worth had “fully eroded” because of the loss it posted that year of Rs 1.4 crore and its losses over earlier years.

The Wire sent a questionnaire to Jay Shah on Thursday seeking details about the shifting fortunes of Temple Enterprise and his other business ventures, as obtained from RoC filings, which he said he could not immediately respond to as he was travelling. On Friday, however, Shah’s lawyer, Manik Dogra, sent in a response with a warning that criminal and civil defamation proceedings would be launched in the event of “any slant or imputation which alleges or suggests any impropriety on his part.”

Too completely prove, how illiterate or devious Singh is, read this paragraph:

Rohini Singh, former journalist at Economic Times, now writing for TheWire.in, just claimed that Reserves and Surplus which turned negative Rs 80.2 lacs from positive Rs 19 lakhs “jumped”! Even grade school children are taught that numbers with brackets with them are negative figures, and basic financial literacy means you know that negative reserves are losses!

REPORTS After OpIndia expose, The Wire selectively alters its story, gets further slammed by readers
But The Wire report on the other hand claimed that the Reserves and Surplus had JUMPED from 19 lakh to Rs 80 lakh in one year (reading a negative number as positive). This single point was enough to discredit the fact checking capabilities and financial literacy of the website, and as a result they predictably got called out.

Now it seems that The Wire decided to clarify on that point and issued a corrigendum, which itself was inaccurate. This is what they initially issued (emphasis added):

“In an earlier version of the article, it was stated that the reserves and surplus of Temple Enterprise rose to 80.2 lakh in 2015-16, whereas it turned negative compared to the previous year. The direction of change, which is inconsequential to the company’s overall performance, has been duly corrected.”

Going by the above corrigendum, The Wire’s interpretations of a company’s health were interesting to say the least, as they clearly didn’t think that financial health doesn’t point to “overall” performance.

This amused various twitter users:
The Wire then seems to have realised that they had again erred, and as pointed out above, and issued a fresh corrigendum (emphasis added):

“In an earlier version of the article, it was stated that the reserves and surplus of Temple Enterprise rose to 80.2 lakh in 2015-16, whereas it turned negative compared to the previous year. The reserves of the company at the end of the year are inconsequential for the larger investigation into the huge increase in turnover of the company.”

However, it should be noted that The Wire is focusing on just one problem in their original report. They have not clarified about:

http://www.opindia.com/2017/10/5-times- ... interview/

5 times Rajdeep Sardesai was absolutely decimated while recording an interview

Controversial journalist Rajdeep Sardesai who currently is working with the India Today group, has interviewed many celebrities and VIPs in his career but in most of the instances, the guests objected to Rajdeep’s attitude, his mannerisms and choice of questions.

This side of Rajdeep again came into public limelight after former President Pranab Mukherjee chastised him during a recent interview.

In this interview which aired on 13th October, Rajdeep is seen asking a question, but rather than patiently seeking a reply he kept interrupting Mr Mukherjee. This angered the former president who then took Rajdeep to task, which included asking him to have the necessary courtesy while conducting the interview. All this left Rajdeep fumbling for an apology:

The headlines on India's Hunger Index rankings are FAKE NEWS. As a journalist I was intrigued by roaring headlines that India has fallen 45 positions in the Hunger Index in three years. That just sounded intuitively wrong. So I emailed IFPRI which publishes this report to ask - could this really be true?

Here is the reply I received:

"Hi Hindol

Thank you for your careful and considerate reporting.

Indeed you are correct that the change is due far more to a change in the calculation rather that a change in India's situation. The Global Hunger Index (GHI) rankings in 2014 did not include any countries rated with "low" hunger levels (as determined by the report). That year there were 44 such countries, all of which would have ranked above India. Were those countries included in the ranking that year India would have not been ranked 55, but 99.

So to compare the two reports directly and conclude India has fallen 45 positions would be grossly inaccurate and misleading.

While India has for many years been at the higher end of the scale and rated with serious hunger levels, it has also made significant progress in reducing hunger in recent decades. Since 2000 India has reduced it's GHI score by nearly 20%.

Hunger remains a serious challenge for India, and the GHI demonstrates the country still has quite a long way to go to eliminate hunger. Several of it's neighbors (Bangladesh and Nepal), have reduced their GHI scores much more than India. An accurate reading of the GHI still shows reason for India be concerned about high hunger levels. But claiming the country has witnessed such a precipitous fall in the global fight to eliminate hunger is very misleading.

We have always been clear about how to interpret GHI data, but if you have further questions please let me know."

I have attached a screenshot of the email I received from IFPRI to this post. Everyone can see the name of the IFPRI representative who wrote back to me.

Every news organisation that made this their headline knew that this was false - or they have absolutely incompetent editors. One of the two must be correct. Yet, it went viral.

This is the state of #FakeNews in India. Even in an issue as serious as hunger. Many people and organisations owe an apology to their audience for this.

Worse than Iraq, Bangladesh and even North Korea – these charts show how hunger haunts India
India ranks 100 out of 119 countries on an index that weighs the abilities of countries to provide food security for their citizens.

rebuttal from Govt
http://thetruepicture.in/global-hunger- ... -index-up/

went through the repot, 44 countries were not included in 2014 study hence India ranked much better, but India actually ranks badly due to population explosion, also ranking low than many countries on several indices...a country of grt inequality
will contribute to fake news collection, media is on rampage

Former colleague claims Siddharth Varadarajan suppressed Vadra scam expose for 7 months http://wp.me/p5pHpP-fen via @opindia_com
While publicising this poorly researched story, The Wire said that the journalist in question wrote about Robert Vadra’s dealings with DLF. This was necessary to pitch Rohini as some upright and ‘neutral’ journalist, especially after some reports, where she was involved as a journalist of The Economic Times, were heavily criticised on Twitter earlier for partisan reporting during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Even if we leave aside Uttar Pradesh reporting controversies, the Vadra episode too is not without controversies. Though this time, the person in question is Mr. Varadrajan.

While Rohini Singh’s story about Vadra’s dealing with DLF did raise some questions about DLF dealings and Shalini Singh herself gave credit to Rohini Singh for her initial reportage, the scam as we know it today, was broken by Ms. Shalini Singh in 2012, substantially building on the information put forth by Rohini Singh, which as the evidence suggests, was not carried by the then Editor of The Hindu, Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan, for 7 long months. All of this leaves a serious question mark on Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan’s professional conduct and his commitment to the truth.

Ms. Shalini Singh had joined the Hindu in February 2012 and she submitted the Vadra story around March-April 2012, after emailing detailed questionnaires to both Mr. Robert Vadra and the DLF. She further says that after she submitted the Vadra report, the editorial team communicated to her that the story wasn’t good enough and couldn’t be carried. As a result, the story remained shelved for 7 months. The Editor of The Hindu at the time was Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan himself. In effect, the onus of the Robert Vadra scam story being shelved for that duration lies squarely on his shoulders.

In an earlier interview, Ms Shalini Singh has said that when she realized that there was no interest in carrying the story, she sought permission to give the story along with the documents to Mr. Prashant Bhushan who was at that time involved with “India Against Corruption”.

Although there were several opportunities to carry the story even then, none were taken. The story was eventually only carried AFTER Mr. Prashant Bhushan’s press conference where he talked about the dubious business deals of Robert Vadra.

The tale doesn’t end here. Even though it was now armed with the safety net of IAC’s allegations, Shalini claims that The Hindu still went ahead and took an editorial decision to add the following caveat to Ms. Shalini’s original article:

Image

Ms. Shalini Singh is a seasoned investigative journalist who prefers to call spade a spade. I personally spoke to her and she confirmed to me that disclaimer of the documents revealing no illegality or impropriety was not her conclusion but an editorial intervention.

Her opinion, as evident from her other articles, television interview, tweets and my conversation with her, was that the scam not only implicated Mr. Robert Vadra but also landed at the doorstep of then Haryana Chief Minister Hooda and Congress President Sonia Gandhi herself. One might then ask – if there was “no illegality or impropriety”, what was the point of first inordinately delaying the the story and then later carrying it with such fanfare?

These revelations bring forth some glaring questions. What was Mr. Varadarajan’s motivation to shelve a story as explosive as this for 7 long months only to publish it after Prashant Bhushan’s press conference, that too with a caveat exonerating Robert Vadra? And if he did, how could he in good conscience, gloat over his credibility by citing how The Hindu broke the Vadra scam (we will see this gloating later in the article)?

Ms. Shalini Singh’s stories have never been questioned. Yet, The Hindu did not stand by her in this case and she eventually left the organization in 2014. It is thus amusing, that today Mr. Varadarajan and The Wire would use the credibility earned by Ms. Shalini to pass off their current shoddy journalism as investigative journalism of merit; to claim that they pursue stories regardless of political color and beyond party lines.

To quote from Ms. Rohini Singh’s Facebook post – “News is something someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertisement. Intimidation and harassment are tools often used by powerful people to get journalists to toe their line”.

Freedom of Press is said to be curbed when the public’s right to know is threatened. While the usual suspects, including Mr. Varadarajan today, erroneously say that the freedom of press in under threat, was it not, when Siddharth himself ensured that the public’s right to know was trampled upon for 7 long months? Ms. Shalini Singh is no victim. But it would certainly seem like Mr. Varadarajan has a lot to answer for.

Barkha Dutt slams NDTV over double standards, says channel's 'free speech crusader' image is a lie
Dutt took potshots at NDTV managing editor Sreenivasan Jain for claiming the channel dropped his stories over legal concerns. She said the management had also dropped her articles in the past, but she didn't create any outrage over it.
They don't stand at press clubs and say 'don't crawl' while seeking appointments with BJP head honchos by night.
Was that a reference to Jet Li? If the government can get a few of these to sing like canaries, about what goes behind close doors, imagine the amount of dirty linen that get washed in public

Jay Shah case: Gujarat court issues summons to reporter and editors of ‘The Wire’
The metropolitan magistrate held there was a prima facie case against the accused asked a reporter and editors of 'The Wire' to appear before it on November 13

he seven respondents in the case are the author of the article, Rohini Singh, founding editors – Siddarth Varadarajan, Sidharth Bhatia and M K Venu, managing editor Monobina Gupta, public editor Pamela Philipose and the Foundation for Independent Journalism, the non-profit company that publishes ‘The Wire’.
Metropolitan magistrate S K Gadhvi recorded the statements of two witnesses produced by Jay and heard his lawyer SV Raju’s argument. The magistrate held there was a prima facie case against the accused and issued summons.
Raju said ‘The Wire’ published the report in a hurry without giving proper time to the complainant to respond. “The report was not an attempt to bring out the truth, but it was to create a political issue ahead of elections,” he said.
In his application, Jay has sought “criminal action against the respondents for defaming and tarnishing the reputation of the complainant through an article, which is scandalous, frivolous, misleading, derogatory, libelous and consisting of several defamatory statements”.

Expect the usual rona-dhona from this, but one thing will be clear to all. There is a real danger in the creation and promotion of fake news and sensationalism directed against the current regime or its defenders. Hitherto it was open season. This, if carried to its logical conclusion should give them pause for thought. At least that is something.
