India's FIFA U-17 World Cup team coach Luis Norton de Matos, on Saturday, refused to predict his side's chances in the upcoming tournament, saying that instead of thinking about the results the country should take it as "a first step for the future".

India are drawn in a tough Group A along with former champions Ghana, Colombia and United States of America, and de Matos dropped enough hints that his side may not reach the knock-out stage of the competition, beginning on October 6.

"It is difficult to build a strong team in seven months but we have done what we can in this short time. There is a gap between India and the other teams, say from Europe and South America," de Matos.

"So, I don't think much about the results and chances but I know my players will give their best. That is what they can do. I see this World Cup as a step forward for the future (for India). India can build on this experience," said the Portuguese tactician when asked about the home team's chances in the tournament.

De Matos, who took over as the head coach of the U-17 team in March after the sacking of Nicolai Adam, was speaking to the reporters at the sidelines of a programme to wish good luck to the Indian team by Hero MotoCorp, the 'national supporter' of the tournament.

Elaborating further, he said, "I was in Egypt in 1997 medition. New Zealand were participating for the first time and they lost all their group matches, including a 0-13 thrashing by Spain. But since then they have done very well at this level. India should be thinking to do like that."

Since 1997, New Zealand have taken part in six editions before the upcoming one in India and have reached knock-out stages twice.

He assured that the country's football fans will be proud of the performance of the Indian players.

De Matos also virtually laid down his playing strategy for the team, which would be a strong defending and attacking on the counter.

“We will be strong in defence, will look not to concede goals, especially would not like to concede early goals. Then we will look for quick and strong transitions and see that we can score in these transitions," he said.

"A team can play attractive football but lose a game or a team can play not so attractive but still win. I think we will try to play a mixture of these two," he added.

PM Modi to attend opening day of U-17 World Cup
http://www.rediff.com/sports/report/pm- ... 171005.htm

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be a part of the FIFA U-17 World Cup's opening day proceedings, which will include a small ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel confirmed this on the eve of the country's first ever FIFA tournament.

FIFA tournaments generally do not have opening ceremonies worldwide and the sport's governing body was never comfortable with the Indian government's plan of having an elaborate opening ceremony for the tournament.

Patel said, "FIFA is very clear on this, FIFA only says don't do it on the actual field of play. It's (opening ceremony) happening tomorrow and the prime minister is coming, there will be a little ceremony."

Patel had said last week that he had extended an invitation to the prime minister to attend India's opening match.

Patel said he is expecting a turnout of 50,000 at the stadium.

"There will be a lot of children from some chosen schools. It will be a strong home support for our team," he said.

The Under-17 World Cup will be played in six cities — New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Kochi and Margao.

Rathore inspects JLN Stadium ahead of India's WV opener

Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today took stock of security arrangements at the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) stadium here, ahead of the much-awaited Under-17 World Cup, commencing.

A sports ministry official said Rathore was satisfied with all the arrangements.

Colombia will take on Ghana in the tournament-opener while hosts India will lock horns with the USA in the second match of the day

The FIFA U-17 World Cup, being hosted in India for the first time, will conclude on October 28. The matches will be played at six different spruced-up venues.

Hima Das takes gold in 400m U-20. She needs to shave off a second still to be competitive in Olympics level, but I hope she will get there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trnnapG4-AM

Major thing to note here for me. She hails from the level of Bharat untouched by IPL/Bollywood/Fair-n-Lovely/etc. Her father is rice farmer, she grew up playing football all her life and only 2 years ago a local PT teacher told her to try track running since he had never seen someone that fast. Hence proving only football is a real sport which can yield real dividends in real sports. Hai hai cricket carrom!!
