Profile in the earlier forum showed I had max posts in physical fitness dhaga to my surprise...so starting here :).

Raja, continuing the kilimanjaro trip talk - I didn't have the portapoty carrying help but they do have pit toilets built at various camps. Not the best but kept reasonably clean. For the fancy get up with higher cost - cost ranges from down down of $1200/300 (which requires much haggling) to 3500 - there has to be some upgrades - better tents, food and toilet paraphernalia. Though one can look at it positively too. These guys probably are carrying out the poop from the mountain -either back down or into those pits rather than leaving it along the slopes.

This is a fav subject of mine. When we hike obviously a TP tent is set up for in all camps. Our guys dig the hole and they will close it when we move. There are some basic rules on where you can dig a hole and where you should not. India hikes got in to a controversy some years back. Some of us do free style, rather than sitting inside a flimsy tent. One of the perks is you can see the mountains in moonlight when you are squatting to do your business. In India, we don't have the capability to bring everything back, but sooner or later we will get there, with hoardes of people visiting these far off places like never before.

Other than drinking lot of water and eating carrots, any other natural remedy to improve aging eyes/vision? Or any suggestions for vitamin or supplements?

Shandaliya,

A number of my friends have told me they stopped wearing glasses after a few months of regularly doing pranayaam every morning.

Also, try eating papaya every day.

Any doctors for muscles, bone injuries here ? I have some moderate to severe pain in my achilles tendon (?) on both feet since more than 2 years. I have been to 1 physiotherapist and 3 doctors and neither helped much. Physio did sessions with heat therapy and some exercises for a month and doctors prescribed some painkillers and medicine like Tendocare.
Did cold pack, hot packs as they suggested and some exercises, but not regularly.
But the pain still persists. I walk a lot in my line of work, love trekking and exercising in gym. But this pain is making it difficult even to walk normally. It is worse once I start walking after I am sitting or lying down for some time but then goes away as I walk for 5-6 minutes.

I have good hiking shoes with foamy inserts which I normally wear.
Earlier my uric acid levels were .1 (10.1 or nearby) level more than normal and got lower with some medicine.


What kind of doctor should I see now or anything else for that matter ? ANy good doctors in Delhi ?

FIL came 2nd in his age group again - 1st one was few weeks ago at a 10K where he came 771/3500 runners overall and 2nd in his age group (65-69). Yesterday he came 2nd in a 5K in the 60-69 age group. Hardy SDRE hillmen can beat the pants off TFPE goras any time. :lol:

2 years of pain is not a small thing.
have you tried various types of shoes over this time or always sticking to your hiking shoes and leather shoes day to day ?

shoes with less of heel-to-toe drop tend to put more stress on the achhilles tendon and back of the calf. a lot of ultra run oriented shoes and running sandals are like that, flat and need getting used to. also the comverse type canvas keds that gen-next likes to wear...heavy and flat.

for average people a good 10-12mm of drop eases the pressure in the back. most Nike/adidas/puma/asics shoe has that. i suggest you try a pair of sneakers if not already.

find a good yogi then do yoga :D

i'm only half joking: i myself took up yoga recently and am loving it now. started seven months ago as DIY and then more formally about four months ago. with just two months of daily DIY yoga i could do rudimentary padmasana--something i hadn't been able to do for decades and had totally given up on for the rest of this lifetime. after the third month of DIY yoga i realized that i knew jack about it and thought it safer to do it with guidance. (i had begun to do headstands by now but realized that my youth is really behind me and i needed to take this one small step at a time.) i had already made up my mind to organize my schedule and life around yoga. i made some dietary changes to go along with the start of 'formal' yoga (which is really 1) a set of simple postures to help stabilize the body for 2) a series of breath exercises). my diet now is 50-60% fruits and another 10-25% lightly cooked or raw veggies, no sugar/meat/nightshades among other things, drink only water and only when thirsty, etc.

the result has been stupendous. cholesterol plummeted to where it is no longer classified as high (for the first time in 10-15 years), body feels light and relaxed, great sleep, increasing flexibility and stability. can actually sit in one position for long periods of time without fidgeting. best test was recently when i sat upright without back support for over an hour (enduring a banal ramchandra guha speech in the process) :roll:

i am planning my first 21k of this season on sunday morning, right after a saturday night brf thugbandhan in a trendy craft beer joint.

got a couple of 16k done recently.

Most of my shoes for daily use (sneakers and hkiing shoes) are cushioned and have ankle support. Not using sandals and dress shoes with less support anymore. That's what doctors recommended.
Had done exercises and physio therapy. These were only marginally effective.

don’t know—i’m a baby when it comes to yoga. do you have tendinitis/soreness or a tear in the tendon? the former could benefit from certain stretches but the latter probably needs to heal fully, with minimal disturbance, over a long period of time—months to years—so continue your search for a good doc. i suspect even in case of a tear a physio/yoga person could suggest some exercises/massages to strengthen certain foot/leg muscles in a way that relieves pain due to the injured tendon

I had a pretty bad ankle injury from a twist that left me unable to run properly for close to 2 years. Couldn't run 100m without a swollen ankle and nothing short of surgery would fix it. I just let it be and it healed up after nearly 3 years. Now I can run 10ks without pain as long as I keep it stable and dont do anything crazy.

While running up a climb to the mine, I noticed deer suddenly running down a slope and congregating in a bunch on the trail. They had their heads perked up and kept nervously looking up the slope and formed a tight group. Most likely a mountain lion was stalking them. Cat must have been an ex-gobermint PSU employee given its late riser habits. :mrgreen: Hard to make out any cat against the dung brown grass so I didn't wait too long and continued up.

You need to see a good podiatrist - foot doctor. It is a separate specialty here in the US. I am sure there will be somebody in India too. Are you sure it is not plantar fascitis? Have you gained weight? Did you have medications like Cipro/Levofloxaxin that can cause Achilles injury?

As SIngha ji has pointed out, proper foot wear is of paramount importance. You may need to try sneakers with different amounts of cushioning and heel height.

Seems like there are some podiatrists in the city but quite far. Will check for appointment.

No weight gain or medications or any other health issues which require treatment. I used treadmill , cross trainers and exercised very regulalrly since last 4-5 years . Also a fair bit of hiking.


Pain is not on bottom of heel but above it.

Just started doing hot packs followed by little massage before bed. Pain seems less after waking up in morning. But is bad after standing and walking for some time which is unavoidable.
