X6 is still available on BB. Why do you need this mega router? I mean, are you on ACT because for all others, the gigabit routers are not available, right?

What was so good about the NetGear?

I'm disappointed even with Asus gigabit routers. I spent closed to 300 bucks and freaking gizmo has poor range at home built only with sheet rocks and cedar studs to block or permeate.

Netgears generally speaking has better range (not signicantly any big diff). Of course at home top many nearby wifi devices nowadin.

All you domesticated fellows.
Netgear x4s sold out before I could get my grubby paws on one. Buggers are quick on black friday sales :(
meh, get the Ubiquiti routers, they will eat any and all the mass market routers..

For home use i generally recommend a 40x10gbps router. headroom for lakhs of routes and 100s of security features so you can run a sme from home if you uplinks are good

The age of multiple 10gbps links for home is dawning and tv entirely will be ott overlay over ipv6 not through dishes or cable networks maybe. Young have shifted already they watch exactly what they want, when they want and where they want on laptops and phones not tv

Youtube is the new cartoon channel for kids

my office MBP15" is due for refresh in 6 months. have used it daily for 30 months now with zero problems and not one loose nut or sw issue. pretty amazing even vs old legends like thinkpad t40 which I used and the W5xx series thinkpads which again I used two models. those had periodic issues albeit rare and the W5xx was heavy and in later models had a tendency for the plastic shell to crack and key quality declined under lenovo. the screens on such remain consistently poor vs macs.

I am not going back to windows laptops if I can. the entire co has voted with their feet and none but the most unlucky basket (new hires fresh from college have to take thinkpads) will touch the lenovo thinkpads which is the other option. the user base has built up and now onsite apple support is there. every internal app we use has its mac equivalent. the only exception is network test equipment clients like from Spirent. these run inside windows VM of vmware fusion.

I do need to think of 10gig routing having direct Google fiber on my wall. But then Google is effed up on fiber and I might move out and sell home.. the new place chacha might even near. The fiber to home is pretty expensive for them. But heck.. the speed is fantastic for both up &down

A new age is dawning in the home entertainment world.

We have had Dish for over 20 yrs, mainly because it was the best way to watch Indian programming here, esp for the times when parents were visiting.

Now we've moved to an all fiberoptic input through Verizon FIOS, which gives us a massive bandwidth (posted here earlier). I have put up an OTA HD antenna up on my roof. All the broadcast channels are now coming through at a resolution that beats anything we had with Dish. SHQ wanted to be able to pause live TV and to be able to record and watch at will so I put a Tablo recorder in the pipeline. This feeds the entire stream through the home network which is a gigabit system. I can record three channels simultaneously for over 400 hrs (limited only by the size of the hard drive I connect to the Tablo).

We can now watch anything anywhere in the house or our backyard on any television, phone, laptop, iPad. For non-broadcast content like netflix, Amazon and a whole bunch of other stuff, we have a Roku box at every TV in the house which streams the content, as well as Sling service for all the Indian channels and Cricket.

Overall, my home phone, internet and entertainment (television and video) bill is now half what it was a month ago plus I have superior content in terms of both quantity and quality, available everywhere on every device instead of just the TVs connected to the Dish boxes.

Truly a liberating experience, cutting the cord. I highly recommend it.

I would love to do the same for my office, but some programs we use are only for Windows and that means we are stuck with the system.

I use VMware Fusion all the time at home to print my photos through QImage (the best print engine for images, bar none). Have been very happy with this arrangement for years. However, the windows OS running through Fusion is still subject to the same crappy 'updates' malady and other issues. For me it is not a huge problem since I only fire it up when I need to print, but in an office where you are using an EMR all day long, cannot run it through a shell, and if I do, will still pose problems for the VM running the EMR.

How much time do you spend with the VM as opposed to the Mac running OS X?

Question is why was it bought and then sold off by alphabet to softbank ?

Goog seems to randomly buy cos and sell or shut them
Softbank is willing to wait long long time for any payoff
Tiger global is exiting ola and flipkart and selling off stake in handsome profit to softbank

Yes, that's what I am told, for any serious Windows programs, a VM is not the best option. Sad, since IMHO the Apple world could do with more business users.

We don’t have cable or dish. All our TV watching is via the internets onlee. Among the mesh routers I found the ones from Eero to work the best and they have been working wonderfully for us with no complaints though their price is on the steeper side.

ACT and buggers keep upping speed and datacap each month without even asking. TV/Tatasky is all but gathering dust except for the F1 weekends. Once even F1 goes digital, this will be permanently sidelined. TV is right next to router and has an ethernet cable running into it. So gone are the days of pogo & babytv. Its all youtube now with no laptop+hdmi cables. So with something like that running and one or two more devices to be run plus whatever the future might throw, better to get something that can take all of it. Current router is an old linksys that has soldiered bravely for 7 years pretty much non-stop.

Plus when I build my photo/video processing (it has taken longer than the damn mrca & arjun trials put together) computer, that'll need heavy support for putting multi-gig data up and down.

do you have a download GB limit ? I have a 350GB limit and thats my only worry about these OTT tv plays in indic context. does a HD channel stream take about 3 Mbps max? even if its 2 Mbps....60 mins would make it 7.2 GB....or is there heavy compression in use on the wire.

I would imagine apple without doing any advertising has deeply penetrated into the general business and engineering user base...with some exceptions where specialized tools exist only in windows like Morts case. generally the east asian electronic cos are not so great or interested in SW and whatever buggy sw they make, goes into windows!

for 95% of users, all the tools and apps they need is available on mac.

my employer surely has 50,000 active laptops for employees and 99% of new buys is the air or MBP, from a rare object of envy few years ago it has become ubiquitous among developers and testers. only a few crusty old 'lifers' and 'distinguished engineers' still go for the thinkpads perhaps by force of habit.

and due to zero interest EMI schemes, literally anyone who can run, walk and crawl among youngistanis esp women are getting themselves a iphone.
the huge manly form factor of the other contenders like OP5 REPEL women just as a overly muscular steroidal gym beast does with popping muscles (!)
the only other smooth and well made product of right form factor of naazuk femme hands is the galaxy phones, and while the HW Is liquid smooth and build quality and camera is top notch, somehow samsung has dropped the ball on making it attractive to people. the camera menu is sure turn off for older gen and women, digging deep into resolutions and stuff only a DSLR munna can make out

tsk tsk. one must appeal to people's vanity and emotion, not just a engineering spec sheet lol

its a myth that MS office is free with Windows . one has to pay for MS office no matter where its installed. maybe some laptops throw in 1 yr free but thereafter you would need to pay.

There is no explicit download limit but I am sure they will throttle if one exceeds a certain amount or they detect torrent traffic. We have never faced issue with download speeds and I have the basic 25MBps connection - never felt the need to upgrade.

MS office was never free and I doubt M$ ever announced anything to that effect. Wonder where people got that idea? Going by how crappy the free offerings like Google Drive and Open Office are, people have no choice but to pay up.

heh, even in desh, most of my TV viewing is through the internet. I got a FTH line from Hathaway with a 1000GB limit for INR 999 :P

We have dish as SHQ likes the UI of the DVR functions, but will soon goto Sling TV with cloud DVR as I upgraded internet service to 300 MBPS and 1000 GB download for $100/mo.

If anyone has experience with Sling TV, please let me know. TIA.

We got the Jio Fibre 100Mbps connection at home.500GB DL limit. Motabhai has decreed that it is in "test phase onlee", so it's free for the foreseeable future.
I have an nVidia Shield TV - really good device. Trying to cut the cord, but there's a paucity of live sports HD channels without digging into Kodi et.al.
Works really well for Netflix, Amazon Prime and local media playback though - I have a 4TB external drive connected, and all my BD rips are piped through it to the receiver.

For live sports, I use hotstar - available in Amazon Fire TV stick, it is HD, but a tad worse than Tata Sky HD, but for the price its worth it; I use 2 Roku's and one Amz fire stick and made all of them "smart" TV.
