The matching algorithms for biometrics like fingerprint are closely guarded IP and rarely protected by patents.
How about Face?

Same thing. Perhaps even more as in case of face as the sensor operation itself (the way Fruit does it) is key IP.

Hi guys, what is good starter DSLR? My knowledge of photography is close to zero, but it's something I have always wanted to take up. Not something too expensive but doesn't have to be the cheapest one either. Purchase will be made in India.

try to get a used one on the cheap if you can. a nikon d5000/5100 should be available for cheap as people upgrade.

Hmmm......

Why a DSLR? Plenty of fixed-lens compact camera options around that will deliver the same quality with a much better form factor. DP Review is indeed an excellent site for reviews and other info.

Thanks will check out DP Review. Price difference between amazon .com and .in is huge, but expected I guess  . Never heard of Pentax before, will have to do some more R&D.

there are sections who strongly believe that pretty girls are attracted to men with DLSRs. not so much to compact camera or phone cam users.

You attract the pretty girls and the loudmouth uncles with 1DXs and L lenses who'll come to tell you your gear sucks, while shooting in auto.

Isn't that right!

Many years ago when I really got serious about photography and could afford the gear, I bought myself a DSLR with one of the L lenses, the 70-200 albeit only the f4 (that's all I could afford then). This was in 2002 when DSLRs were just emerging. When I went anywhere on vacation with the family (kids were still in high school), they made sure they walked several feet behind me and would loudly proclaim to any passer by 'we're not with him'. They were, SHQ particularly, embarrassed about all the gear that I was carrying.

Over the years I've stopped worrying about attention unless I am in a dangerous place where I will not take out anything that looks expensive. I've had complete strangers come and talk to me about the camera I am using especially if it looks different. It is an interesting conversation as quite often they are enthusiasts themselves exchanging notes about equipment.

How many times have you heard this phrase from people who see your pictures: 'Your photos are amazing, you must have a great camera!'

I know a gora electronics technician in his late 50s who does lots of portraiture. When he sees a pretty girl, usually a waitress or retail employee, he talks very friendly with them and hands them a business card with his portfolio link. If they continue talking, he pulls out his large smartphone and shows them the portfolio. The pics generally consists of nude-semi-nude shots in an interesting setting. The ones that talk to him, he says that 50% will contact him in the next couple of weeks.

Needless to say I was slack jawed. His wife, hispanic lady, has given him full approval and from what I gathered that’s how he met her. His claim is that if someone sees you with photo gear, don’t talk about it, but rather have your portfolio demos ready for viewing. More often than not, many women will pose for him and he strongly encourages them to bring their boyfriend or husband so they feel comfortable.

Pentax not great in India. Go for Nikon or Canon. Dont buy long zoom lens, specially cheap ones.

Mirrorless cameras are small and light, worth looking in to but battery life is an issue.

A used 6d/5d mark 2 and a walkaround lens like the tamron 17-50 would be good enough to start off. Decent enough for portraiture, landscape etc. You could rent/borrow long lenses if you want to shoot tele stuff.

'What camera should I buy"?

I get asked this question so often. My response usually is,

1. What do you want to do with your camera, i.e what kind of photography and subjects do you intend to shoot, what would you use it (mainly) for?
2. What do you want to do with the pictures you take with it? Do you want to simply post them on social media, print holiday snaps or do more, i.e. larger fine-art type printing.
3. How big a camera bag do you want to carry around everywhere you go? Remember if you are traveling you will have to look after it all the time.
4. Finally, how much money do you want to spend? A good system can be had for well under $1000 these days, even $500 will get you a good starter kit. Don't forget the accessories - cards, extra batteries, camera bag/case, filters etc also add up.

All of this would determine what is the best system for a person. The choices are too many and there is no single best answer.

Need a FF lens like the 24-105L for that. The 17-50 is a crop lens.

Yes, only works on an APS-C sensor camera like the 7D.

For good portraiture, the ideal lens is not 50 but at least 85mm and ideally the 70-200 zoom. That gives you the most flexibility but is very expensive. The Canon 24-105 is an excellent all-round walkabout lens that will give you everything - from wide to portraits and also has enough length for some tele work. However, again it is quite expensive.

Everything depends upon your shooting preferences, budget, ability to carry big bags everywhere etc.
