Music, Poetry & Shero Shayari

Post by Indrad » Sun Feb 25, 2018 11:09 am

lets begin this thread by congratulating the one & only Ilaya Raja on getting Padam Vibhushan..would have been better if he got Bharat Ratna, he deserves one!!

Thanks to Sri Kumar for posting a powerful Telugu score ...which got me started on this thread.

M M Kreem in Kshana Kshanam

This film was also made in Hindi by name Hairaan. Obviously it flopped.

But very good scores.

shall be very thankful if a line or two could be written abt meaning of these lyrics as some of us don;t understand Tamil/Telugu.

If you liked Ninnukori varnam you might like this variation/remix by singer Harini (Tamil version) with a rock band...and she does an explosive sargam at the end. I liked it thought some did not.

Had NO idea Kshanam Kshanam was dubbed in Hindi as Hairan. The Telugu movie was a huge hit and brought RamGopal Verma a lot of fame.

As for the meansings of the songs....
Sravava Veena....I'll post details later but the starting lines have to do with 'it is so so cold .... the young like us are going to play..''. The lyrics are a bit technical and I am sure I've destroyed it already. The second one is about 'the night is silent (?), shall I sing a lullaby now, like a branch of flowers in a strong wind ' ??. MAybe same lyrics as Hairan (I did not hear them yet).

Carnatic classical is very tough....from hearsay Pt Bhimsen Joshi had picked up Carnatic and then left it to pursue North Indian classical.

Vijay Prakash singing Om Shivoham...

what a powerful language Sanskrit is..

another version

another person sitting across is Mano, actually an accomplished singer, many songs we think done by Balu is actually his voice.

Yep. I still cannot differentiate between Mano and SPB's voice....only in a few cases.
While we are still on the topic of Sridevi, her first Hindi song was in this movie (made in 1980). Tu hai Raja Main hoon Rani.
Movie is shot in Delhi. Humayun's tomb (?), nearby An Afghan's noble tomb...and many other Dilli ke nazaare can be seen. In the last 1 minute of the song, there is a twist....

IndraD, here is another gem from Ilaya raja, that, to my knowledge has not been done in any other language. All songs in this movie are classics. He used 3 different male singers in this movie (as opposed to just SPB). This song is by SPB though.

Here is another song from the same movie: Fast song, showing IR himself in the song. Loosely based on Maalkauns raag. This song was partly shot in a recording studio ...and it shows the musicians playing in the song.

HAve you heard this song in Bangali (original) sung by RDB himself, with Asha Bhonsale. Hindi version was song by SPB and Asha Bhonsale (Aaja meri jaan).

raag jhinjhoti http://www.tanarang.com/english/jhinjhoti_eng.htm ^

it is unfortunate in spite of having raag base, folk songs these days Bwood music is mostly cheap pop & remixes. Song like aashi banaya by Himesh reshamiya can't be heard in first go has got a remix on it.

Was listein to 'Tere mere beech mein'....(LAta's version had a lot more murkiyaan than SPB's)
Music by Laxmikant Kudalkar and Pyarelal Sharma

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGKDBhdxn6c

and realized it had a common raaga with this Ilaya Raja composition (starring Sridevi)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeTTtCdWfvY

Seems like they are based on Raag Sivaranjani ...the most phamous song in this raag (for me anyway)
Mere naina saawan bhaadon

SriKumar

Hindi version of original dhak dhak karne laga is done by Anand Milind. He made up an entire career plagiarising Ilaya Raja's music.
He stole IR songs right & left from Agni nakshatram to maunragam..

Had no idea it was widespread ..I guess IR would have known. He does listen to Hindi songs... in an interview his list of great Hindi music directors include Naushad, SD Burman, Roshan and Madan Mohan. On that note, here's a Madan Mohan classic.... TUm Jo mil gaye ho..

Orchestration/arrangement done by Kersi Lord (singer Bhupendra Singh played guitar in this piece)
This peice has the opening guitar notes....

Aaja jaane jaaan (lata Mangeshkar original) sung by Sarrika Singh.
Reason for posting here is two-fold- the 'full' orchestra is shown in action. It shows the number of instruments and the phenomenal amount of coordination required to get everyone in sync.

And the icing on cake: Pyarelal Sharma (or the LAxmikant Pyarelal fame) is on stage 'conducting' in his white suit. The real conductor is in black suit....

Gurus, is there a collection of Sanskrit texts you would recommend?
I recently came across the Clay Sanskrit Library on Amazon, and in my excitement nearly purchased the whole thing as an impulse purchase, but decided to just check out the descriptions.
All kinds of veritable scumbags have performed the translations, or written forewords - Mani Shankar Aiyar, UR Ananthamurthy, Romila Thapar, Sheldon Pollock. Will not spend a single paisa to support these scumbags.
I have found Bibek Debroy's work on the Ramayana and Mahabharata to be exemplary, and he is very Indic in his outlook, and can't seem to find anything of similar quality.

How do you figure out the raag of a song? Do you play the notes of the antara on a keyboard? Or can you get it just by listening? And if listening, do you listen to specific phrases (e.g. pakad of the raag) or any other random phrase that is popularly used for that raag? How do you account for 'accidental' notes that most filmy songs usually have?

I can 'sense' only those songs based on Maalkauns and yaman, but not always.....and Darbari Kanada sometimes.
