Re: Non-Indian Films discussion thread...

My brain is as great as the movies I select. I wanted to watch D-Day but typed Normandy. Normandy is turning out to be a B-Grade movie.. Have you watched The Longest Day? That is a classic - B&W. I watched it when it was originally released - in the 60s. Didn't understand a word. Tried again ...

Re: Phone, Tablet & Gizmo Thread

Hi guys, what is good starter DSLR? My knowledge of photography is close to zero, but it's something I have always wanted to take up. Not something too expensive but doesn't have to be the cheapest one either. Purchase will be made in India. Do not buy a DSLR. Learn photography by taking photos wit...

Re: Creating an Indian English Dictionary

Think about it this way. Oxford/Webster dictionaries are considered to be the "standard" of the English language whether we agree or not. I am trying to say that the standard is a. Not good enough for Indian usage b. Needs massive additions You are of course welcome to stick to the Occsphord/Webste...

Re: Creating an Indian English Dictionary

The Times of India is celebrating white man's acceptance of Indian words. That is completely useless for us and it is hardly global because 1.3 billion Chinese and 2 billion others don't give a rat's ass for English in their day to day transactions. We really need to stop celebrating this praise of ...

Gluten and lactose intolerance is genetic in distribution, has nothing to do with exposure to allergens or clean/dirty environment. The most lactose tolerant people are Scandinavians. The darker the skin color the more likely one is to be lactose intolerant, that is the general distribution in the ...

Just like "vold-ane" for "hold on" when the truck cleaner tells the driver to stop while reversing. In South India the accepted terms are: rai-rai (right right) for "keep going" and "oldee"/"oldeet" for "holdit" The pdf below tells how English words have been internalized into Japanese http://cites...

Re: Creating an Indian English Dictionary

'puncher' etc are not really words. They are there because someone heard it wrong the first time and it perpetuated. I have a quibble with this statement. Dictionary makers use "live language" to add words. In this case you are doing exactly what I am complaining about - which is cross-checking wit...

Re: IT, Linux and other Open Source Software Discussion

^^I think I will do that - credit must go to a series of very lucid informative videos on the Blender website which helped me come to grips with the basic modeling controls. Shading/Texture is another matter but I do want to do a small animation of a MiG 21 in flight, ugly as the model looks to me. ...

Re: Indian Movies Thread

Since such stuff is a click away and I don't have to take a Tempo to Pattanikadai and trudge to Raja Talkies and buy a Rs 5 ticket, I clicked on "Simran". I managed to watch the first 20 minutes and then I fast forwarded to watch the last 15 minutes. Did not yenjaay. However Kangana Ranaut is a very...

Re: IT, Linux and other Open Source Software Discussion

Blender is not good for that kind of 3D cad work. You. We'd at least autocad or better still solidworks or Siemens plm, Catia or Pro-e. Opencad or scad also might do the trick. Blender is definitely the wrong tool to use, IMHO. There is s huge $$ gap between the products you have named and Blender ...

Creating an Indian English Dictionary

For me, personally this has been a longstanding sore point. There is no reason why common Indian proper names or Indianisms should not be included in a separate dictionary that can be downloaded and used in your browser or word processor. We seem to treat English as second wife - we want her but we ...

Re: IT, Linux and other Open Source Software Discussion

I find myself plodding along on Blender. I have constructed 3/4 of a MiG 21. But creating the cockpit is a real bugger. I can create an approximate one. Hey maybe this is the wrong thread. Maybe a separate thread on 2D/3d modelling? I might do that if I can find an alternative image hosting site oth...

Re: Non-Indian Films discussion thread...

I complained that there were too many movies that I had not watched and over the last few days I was made to understand why that was not such a bad thing. I first watched "English Patient" which held my interest. Based on this choice I saw recommendations for 2 more romance movies. One was "Lady Cha...

Re: Improving footpaths, streets and city roads

Hello Rahul Mehtaji. I may regret this post, but nevertheless it is an issue that concerns me. 1. There are areas in US cities that have no footpaths because everyone uses cars 2. In Bengaluru selected roads are gradually being subjected to what is called as TenderSure. What is done is to map and id...

Re: IT, Linux and other Open Source Software Discussion

Shiv, Hats off to you for trying to learn 3D on your own. Have you tried RhinoCeros? I found it easier than Blender. Blender has a contextual interface, which means it changes in response to what you are doing. That's what made it confusing for me. If you want to stick to it, I would suggest gettin...

Re: IT, Linux and other Open Source Software Discussion

In my mind I can picture a 3D grid with an aircraft in it. In my mind I can see myself numbering each point that corresponds to something on the aircraft - something like X1, Y7, Z12. If I can build this grid on a computer screen and join up the points I would have wire mesh of the aircraft. But to ...

Have you watached any video tutorials ?
I am watching a series of 25 videos. I have done the first 7-8 with many repeats - and they are very good. I will get somewhat familiar with blender eventually - but I am looking for a very limited capability and trying to see if there is a short cut.

I notice that this topic was in the now dead GDF and I am restarting it here for purely selfish reasons. I want to learn 3D modeling and am labouring through some very nice Blender tutorials. But Blender is too toooooo powerful for my needs and will take some getting used to.. In the meantime I have...

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I have no "special interests". I would not mind watching good war movies, westerns. Re: Non-Indian Films discussion thread...

40 years ago I was a normal human - who watched movies like anyone else. Then I got into college.. After having missed 99% of good movies for 40 years I am on a movie watching binge now. Please post names of good movies in the last 40 years (I'm serious) so I can choose. I have forgotten their names...
