Re: ISRO and Space News Discussions 2019

What an emotional roller coaster it was. Got to admit would have been perfect had it worked all the way, but at least we met 85-90% of the objectives. I believe the lander has been found, likely it is severely damaged though.

Very proud of ISRO and the team.

Re: Indian Movies Thread

OK, will do. However, I think MM was a good movie. By now you have to ignore the appeasement stuff, at least is is not so gratuitous as in Sacred Games.

Got to see if Batla House is playing locally.

Re: Cricket

Yes, it is sorry to see Ashwin sidelined as he is. Indeed a capable batsman, but the world over, it seems the wickets are better suited to swing and pace. Kuldip Yadav too is pretty amazing when he can get going. There is something magical about a wrist leg spinner. What a long way the West Indies h...

Re: Indian Movies Thread

Saw Mission Mangal this weekend. Loved it. You have to ignore the mandatory Bollywood stuff in between, but the story is quite gripping and well done, liberal dose of humor included. Vidya Balan I am afraid seems to be going the Smriti Irani way, but she does a good job.

Worth watching for sure.

Mani Iyer's book NDTV Frauds is worth reading.

As Ravi Shankar Prasad is fond of saying 'Baat niklegi to bahut door tak jayegi'. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Re: The Great Indian Political Drama - 4

What is fortunate is that the BJP still has some very good people in it. Hopefully the younger generation will come up and take the baton. But the three big ones will be sorely missed.

Re: Books Discussion Thread

Coming to this thread and BGR in general after a gap. Thank you Sachin. Yes, I too have the book, started reading it but work and domestic duties took up most of my time - I know, flimsy excuse! Will resume my reading now. Agnihotri speaks very well and you can see his anguish at the world he has wi...

Re: Health and Fitness

There is a great deal of work being done in the field of life-extension, or more aptly, healthspan extension. Google has a subsidiary called Calico, the explicit purpose of which is to find the means to extend human life beyond the present. They don't say it openly, but I believe the idea is to make...

Re: Health and Fitness

Muns, the opioid crisis in the US is indeed an epidemic and the sad part is that it is now the biggest killer of young people among all drugs. Sadly, suicide remains the no.2 cause which in itself is a terrible indictment of our society. For all those who are into medicine or have an interest in hea...

Re: The Great Indian Political Drama - 4

I am not surprised that the mediation failed, it was always bound to. Muslims cannot be seen to be 'giving even an inch' to infidels. It is bad for the Ummah as a whole. The entire thing is a house of cards and will collapse if the slightest concession is given to other faiths or ideologies. The Sup...

The third maneuver has also been successfully completed. From what I am reading, C-II may well save enough fuel to extend the orbit time by one more year. That would be an amazing feat.

Saw Romeo Akbar Walter on Netflix. Pretty good stuff, well made and the sets were authentic. Good acting too. Said to be based on true events which makes it that much more interesting.

Anybody seen 'Tashkent Files'?

Re: Cricket

In the end it was indeed a good game of cricket. Wonder what the NZ fielder who let the extra four runs in the overthrow in the last over feels. It is so important to realize that even a single run allowed due to a misfield can lose the match for you. Even though NZ led up until the 49th over and in...

Re: Cricket

The WC Finals has become a damp squib for me, just like it has for many Indians I am sure. Two teams that barely made it to the semis are playing for the cup, both of them having gotten there perhaps by our own fault and by the vagaries of luck, one of them not even having played a full and proper g...

Re: Cricket

It is a sad story, I started watching a bit late by the time 3 had fallen, now it is 48 for 4 and it looks pretty much impossible from here on. Dhoni is nowhere near what he used to be (can't blame him at his age). One could make excuses for the pitch and the air favoring swing after the rain yester...

Re: Cricket

I don't understand the system at all. I am sure India is in the semis. Question is, who will they play? I expect it will be NZ or England again. They haven't played NZ this WC so it will be an interesting match to watch.

Wow, amazing detail! Wouldn't have thought the kit lens would bring in such sharpness. Yes, very sharp images. Great work Sam. Thanks for sharing. The big advantage of B&W conversion is you can sharpen them beyond what you could with color. So even if the lens does not resolve such detail, post-pro...

Re: Camera and Photography Thread

Thank you Primus for your inputs. Let me try to find if above is available in India. Considering the weight of the Camera + Lens, is it ok to use lighter Carbon fiber or should I go for Aluminium for getting more stability? Carbon fiber tripods are just as sturdy. You can put 50-60 lbs on them (the...
